Spice Dining Chandama was opened in December of 2008 and is located at North 3, West 7 in the Ryokuen Building near the Sapporo Botanical Garden and Hokkaido Prefecture Building. One of Sapporo’s most authentic Indian food restaurants, they specialize in organic dishes made from locally sourced ingredients grown in Makkari, Hokkaido. Their curry spices are imported from Pune and Mumbai India and are of the highest quality. Special care and attention is given to providing the highest quality food, which is cooked using organic vegetables oils, so the dishes are not too oily or salty and do not have any artificial chemicals.
While they mainly serve the lunch crowd from the local government and surrounding office buildings, they also offer party plans, complete with two hour all-you-can-drink specials which are very popular for groups. Supporting these party plans is an excellent selection of cocktails including original cocktails such as the “Only Chandama”, on-tap local beers like Sapporo Classic and Indian wine, whiskey and rum. Lunch can be quite busy, so it’s a good idea to try and get there just before the lunch rush starts at 12:00.
Chandama is well connected with the local culture including yoga schools, music and art events, and the friendly staff will be happy to suggest interesting places for you to visit during your stay. English and Japanese are both spoken, so you won’t have to worry about communication issues.
The menu includes 45 varieties of curry, including chicken, vegetable, mutton and seafood. The most popular dishes are Chicken Lababdar, Butter Chicken, Vegetable Shahi Paneer, beanscurry, Mutton Do Piazza and Spinach Seafood. There are also twleve different varieties of nan bread, including Sesame Nan, Cheese Nan, Paneer Kulcha and Vegtable Kulcha. Chandama and sister restaturant Jyoti are two of the only truly vegan restaurants in Sapporo. Owner Mahavir Solanki is himself a 100% vegetarian so he can vouch for this himself. In addition, he is a longtime practitioner of Indian Astrology and offers astrology sessions on site!
